Overview

As Senior Mechanical Design Engineer at VIAVI, you'll lead the mechanical design of advanced optical test and measurement products, collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams from concept to production. You'll shape enclosure, components, and electromechanical assemblies for fiber optic equipment used in lab, manufacturing, and field settings. Expect to drive design for manufacturability and contribute to product qualification and continuous improvement. This role combines hands-on design with cross-functional leadership in a global engineering environment.

Responsibilities
  • Lead mechanical design and development of optical test equipment and systems
  • Develop innovative solutions for fiber optic connectors, optical inspection products, and measurement systems
  • Design components and subsystems from concept through production release
  • Collaborate with optical and electrical engineers to integrate systems and ensure robust performance
  • Prototype, test, and validate designs to meet reliability and performance requirements
  • Apply DFM/DFA principles to optimize cost, quality, and manufacturability
  • Identify opportunities to improve performance, reliability, and manufacturability
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation (CAD models, drawings, BOMs, test plans)
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership across teams
  • Partner with R&D, manufacturing, sourcing, quality, and product management for successful delivery
  • Support product qualification and validation activities
  • Drive engineering best practices and standardization initiatives
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Significant experience in mechanical product design and development
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks (or equivalent 3D MCAD)
  • Experience tolerance stack-up analysis
  • Experience thermal simulation
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T
  • Experience creating manufacturing drawings and supporting production release
  • Familiarity with prototype development including 3D printing/additive manufacturing
  • Understanding of complete product development lifecycle from concept to launch
  • Strong communication skills
