Mechanical Systems Engineer

Overview

In this role you will support the district energy system's operation, optimization, and expansion to serve Chicago-area customers. You'll work with operations, customers, and internal stakeholders to analyze performance, lead capital improvements, and enable new customer initiatives. The position emphasizes hands-on engineering with project execution and cross-functional collaboration. You will help ensure reliability of energy transfer stations and related utility infrastructure, delivering technical insights for business development and regulatory coordination.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize customer energy transfer station equipment, instrumentation, and control systems
  • Plan, budget, and manage refurbishment and capital improvement projects for customer facilities and utility infrastructure
  • Support new construction projects, system expansions, and customer connection initiatives
  • Conduct engineering analyses and support business development through feasibility studies and technology assessments
  • Analyze metered data and system performance for billing, forecasting, and operations
  • Interface with customers, contractors, and regulatory agencies on technical issues, permits, and project execution
  • Prepare reports, operating summaries, and technical documents to support company objectives
Key requirements
  • 5+ years of engineering experience across mechanical, process, utility, district energy, or power systems
  • Experience supporting operation, troubleshooting, optimization, and capital projects of utility systems or district energy facilities
  • Strong understanding of mechanical and utility systems (chilled water, steam, pumps, heat exchangers)
  • Experience managing engineering or capital projects from planning through execution
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, AFT Fathom, control systems, SCADA, or data acquisition systems (preferred)
