Overview In this role you lead senior technical rail track design across major US and Americas projects, driving safe, constructible track solutions and serving as Engineer of Record. You'll oversee design from concept to construction support, coordinate with cross discipline teams, and mentor engineers while expanding Arup's track capability. You'll engage clients and pursue new rail opportunities, shaping how we deliver complex rail facilities and programs at scale.

Responsibilities- Serve as senior technical lead and Engineer of Record for rail track design packages (alignment, trackwork, yard and mainline track, interfaces)
- Lead detailed track design delivery from concept through final design, construction support and closeout
- Provide direction on alignment, track types, drainage, clearances, and track/structure interfaces
- Oversee preparation, review and certification of drawings, specs, reports, calculations and submittals
- Lead track scope on design-build projects and coordinate with contractors, owners, and subconsultants
- Manage interdisciplinary interfaces between track and civil, structures, drainage, utilities, and facilities
- Contribute to constructability reviews and track construction sequencing with multidisciplinary teams
- Lead risk management and design assurance for track design and compliance
- Support construction-phase services, including RFIs, submittals, non-conformances, and field observations
- Build relationships with agencies, contractors, subconsultants, and project leadership
- Support rail pursuits, proposals, interviews and client engagement with track design credibility
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers to grow a sustainable track design team in the Americas
- Support resourcing, work planning, and development of consistent track design delivery methods
- Share knowledge and lessons learned to enhance Arup's rail capability
Key requirements- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field; Master's desirable
- Professional Engineer (PE) license; able to act as Engineer of Record in relevant US jurisdictions; P.Eng in Canada a plus
- Minimum 20 years' rail track engineering experience with recent detailed design delivery
- Proven leadership of track design packages on major rail/transit projects (final design and construction support)
- Strong knowledge of rail/transit standards, codes, criteria, and agency requirements
- Experience with light/heavy/commuter/intercity and/or high-speed rail; yards and maintenance facilities
- Design-build delivery experience; progressive design-build preferred
- Ability to integrate track design with multidisciplinary requirements
- Strong technical judgment for complex design, interfaces, constructability and standards compliance
- Experience leading technical teams, mentoring staff, coordinating subconsultants, and QA processes
- Strong client relationship, communication, and presentation skills
- Ability to support business development, pursuits, proposals and interviews for major rail programs
- Experience with West Coast transit agencies (Sound Transit, CA High-Speed Rail, LA Metro, CalTrain); other NA clients desirable
- DBIA certification or integrated delivery experience beneficial but not required
