Overview As a Substation Site Civil Engineer within HDR's Power Delivery team, you will design, supervise, and support civil Site work for high-voltage substation projects. You'll work in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary setting to turn concepts into safe, reliable infrastructure across lifecycles from design through commissioning. You will help establish standards, coordinate with substation teams, and mentor junior staff. Responsibilities- Lead, oversee, review, and execute site civil tasks (grading, drainage, stormwater, erosion and sediment control)
- Establish and maintain technical standards, guidelines, and practices
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary substation teams (physical, structural, electrical, geotechnical, environmental)
- Prepare and review construction specifications and materials
- Prepare/submit permits and coordinate with authorities
- Monitor industry best practices and emerging substation site design technologies
- Perform quality checks/reviews per HDR QMS for project deliverables
- Mentor/train junior staff (EITs or CAD/Designers) and work on multiple projects concurrently
- Assist with technical papers or presentations for industry events
- Participate in project reviews; travel may be required
Key requirements- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent
- Minimum 5 years of technical site civil design experience for high-voltage switchyard/substation projects
- Experience with design software (e.g., AutoCAD Civil 3D) and stormwater modeling
- Experience with DOT access-road, stormwater, erosion control regulations, FEMA flood plains
- Strong written and verbal communication; ability to work independently and in teams
