Overview

As a Senior Substation Physical Design Engineer, you will lead the design of high-voltage substations and develop code-compliant solutions. You'll mentor junior engineers and drive technical excellence across complex utility projects. You collaborate with clients and cross-functional teams to move designs from concept to construction, upholding safety, quality, and reliability. This role offers remote or hybrid work, with meaningful impact on the electric grid and utility infrastructure.

Responsibilities
  • Design power utility substations per codes and client standards, covering general arrangement, layouts, trenching, grounding, drawings, BOMs, and AC/DC power systems
  • Design ground grids and lightning protection plans using industry software
  • Perform calculations for load, bus spans, and ampacity, and prepare equipment specifications and cost estimates
  • Develop conceptual designs for facility planning studies and support procurement, construction, and operation/maintenance
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, vendors, and contractors to ensure project success
  • Lead client meetings and site visits to collect data, present solutions, and resolve technical issues
  • Ensure QA/QC processes, review engineering packages, and approve design work
  • Provide mentorship and technical oversight to junior engineers and designers
Key requirements
  • ABET-accredited Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or Mechanical/Civil)
  • 7-10 years of experience in Substation physical design engineering
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Strong document management, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects
