Overview

In this co-op role you will contribute to engineering teams across transmission, distribution, project management, EH&S, and grid planning. You'll support design, analysis, and construction activities that advance Duke Energy's grid reliability, safety, and decarbonization goals. You'll gain hands-on experience through rotations, mentorship, and cross-functional collaboration. The opportunity supports real-world impact in a leading utility as you explore fit for full-time positions after graduation.

Responsibilities
  • Assist staff engineers in design, analysis, and upgrade projects for transmission or distribution assets
  • Support grid planning, system operations, or asset management tasks during rotations
  • Contribute to project management, design-build activities, and startup of new generation or renewable projects
  • Support safety, regulatory compliance, and environmental oversight activities in EH&S contexts
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to deliver on reliability, safety, and efficiency goals
  • Assist with data analysis, modeling, and simulations to inform decisions
  • Participate in site visits, construction oversight, and field observations
  • Communicate findings and progress through concise reports and presentations
Key requirements
  • Cumulative GPA 3.0 or higher
  • Ability to complete two non-contiguous co-op sessions
  • Technical proficiency with CAD tools, MFAD, STAAD Pro, MATLAB, PSS/E, Power World
  • Previous engineering work experience (preferred)
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Proven leadership and effective decision-making
  • Ability to prioritize and deliver results within deadlines
  • Valid driver's license may be required
  • Commitment to full-time 40 hours/week for 16 weeks (Jan-May 2027)
