Overview

As a Water Resources Engineer, you support Maryland roadway drainage projects by applying hydrology and hydraulics to stormwater and culvert design. You work within the Baltimore Transportation team to integrate water resources with highway designs and ensure MDOT SHA compliance. You'll develop drainage solutions and 3D models, coordinating across disciplines to deliver robust, sustainable infrastructure. This role offers impact on Maryland's transportation network and opportunities to shape drainage practices in a collaborative, hybrid setting.

Responsibilities
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for roadway projects using MDOT SHA criteria
  • Design storm drainage systems, culverts, ditches, channels, underdrains, and erosion control per Maryland standards
  • Create 3D models of drainage networks using OpenRoads/Civil 3D and MDOT SHA criteria
  • Prepare drainage reports, computations, and engineering documentation per Maryland procedures
  • Coordinate with roadway, structural, environmental, traffic, and geotechnical teams to integrate water resources into highway projects
  • Support SWM and environmental permitting with local and state agencies
  • Conduct plan quality reviews, participate in value engineering, and assist construction-phase submittals
  • Engage in project planning, scheduling, and interdisciplinary design coordination
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field
  • Professional experience in hydrology, hydraulics, stormwater management, or roadway drainage design
  • Professional Engineer (PE) in Maryland
  • Familiarity with MDOT SHA drainage design requirements and stormwater criteria
  • Proficiency with H&H tools (HY-8, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS) and CAD platforms (Bentley OpenRoads, AutoDesk Civil 3D)
  • Understanding of AASHTO drainage guidance and FHWA hydraulic standards for Maryland projects
  • Experience preparing drainage plans, computations, and technical reports
  • Collaborative and cross-disciplinary communication
