Overview

As a Mechanical Engineer on the Maintenance team in Roanoke, you will drive reliability and performance of rotating equipment through preventive and predictive maintenance. You'll work within a cross-functional team to optimize machinery, support shutdowns, and lead improvement projects that reduce downtime and energy use. You will apply RCA and engineering judgment to solve recurring issues and ensure safety and compliance. This role offers hands-on impact across equipment, procedures, and continuous improvement within a long-established company.

Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on mechanical equipment (pumps, compressors, conveyors, gearboxes, rotary equipment, hydraulics/pneumatics).
  • Diagnose mechanical failures and implement corrective actions to minimize downtime.
  • Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) on recurring issues and apply solutions.
  • Monitor and optimize equipment performance, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Develop/update maintenance procedures, SOPs, and equipment history in CMMS.
  • Ensure critical spares availability and support inventory optimization.
  • Assist in planning shutdowns/turnarounds and coordinate mechanical activities.
  • Support installation, commissioning, and modification of mechanical systems.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, cost reduction, and energy efficiency projects.
  • Review drawings, P&IDs, manuals; ensure compliance with mechanical standards.
  • Adhere to safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements; lead/participate in safety inspections and risk assessments.
  • Provide technical guidance to maintenance technicians and support training.
  • Other duties as directed by the Maintenance Manager.
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of rotating equipment, lubrication, bearings, alignment, and vibration basics.
  • Familiarity with reliability tools (RCA, FMEA, 5-Why).
  • Ability to read/interpret mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and technical documentation.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities
