Overview

As Sr. Portfolio Underwriting Specialist, you will oversee renewal underwriting for a nationwide Middle Market portfolio, collaborating with field and home-office teams to drive profitability. You will mentor colleagues, train new hires, and lead underwriting decisions within your authority, while managing risk and pricing to meet business objectives. The role blends technical underwriting with portfolio strategy, partnering with agency and field leadership to optimize performance. This position offers hybrid/remote work and exposure to broad geographic exposure through rotating portfolio assignments. Responsibilities
  • Underwrite and retain renewal accounts to support profitability and strategic objectives
  • Manage a renewal book of 120-160 accounts with $16-20M average premium
  • Exercise high-level field underwriter authority and collaborate across internal/external stakeholders
  • Mentor and train teammates; participate in projects to improve underwriting performance
  • Operate within Letter of Authority and coordinate with leadership on decisions
  • Coordinate with Underwriting Assistant to ensure efficient renewal processing
  • Apply advanced underwriting concepts, risk analysis, and guidelines to renewals
  • Provide training on systems, tools, processes, and workflows to staff
  • Adhere to catastrophe guidelines and ensure pricing/terms reflect risk
  • Collaborate with Risk Solutions on risk mitigation and conduct stewardship meetings
  • Prepare documentation for adverse decisions, rate appeals, and non-renewals
  • Manage portfolio against rate, retention, mix, and profitability targets
  • Identify cross-sell opportunities; coordinate with Sales Underwriter for new business
  • Share market/industry insights to refine portfolio strategies
  • Lead profit-improvement initiatives with agency partners
  • Communicate effectively about account decisions within scope of authority
  • Keep Sales Underwriting informed of adverse actions
  • Stay current on regulatory and market trends
  • Maintain agency relationships and drive cross-sell opportunities
  • Demonstrate strong negotiation, decision-making, and client-facing skills
Key requirements
  • 10+ years of standard commercial lines underwriting experience
  • Minimum 5 years underwriting Middle Market accounts
  • Experience with accounts of $100K premium and above (preferred)
  • Bachelor degree or equivalent experience
  • Ability to work within a shifting territory and respond to business needs
