Senior Electrical Engineer-Battery Energy Storage Systems

Overview

In this role you will drive the electrical design and integration of grid-scale battery energy storage systems, supporting engineers across disciplines to deliver construction-ready packages. You'll evaluate storage technologies, support microgrids and DER projects, and translate complex storage concepts into clear reports for diverse audiences. You'll work closely with clients, regulators, and design teams to advance reliable and sustainable energy infrastructure. This is a hands-on, impact-driven position within HDR's employee-owned culture that values inclusion and technical excellence.

Responsibilities
  • Develop conceptual layouts and one-line diagrams for BESS projects and support detailed design through construction packages.
  • Evaluate energy storage technologies and assist clients with technology/vendor selection and implementation.
  • Design electrical engineering plans, specs, cost estimates, and construction documents at multiple milestones for BESS.
  • Define use-cases for BESS in centralized and distributed locations for clients like developers and utilities.
  • Prepare technical reports communicating storage concepts, use-cases, and feasibility findings to varied audiences.
  • Coordinate with civil, structural, FLS, HV electrical, SCADA/telecom, water, and geotechnical engineers to create complete construction packages.
  • Participate in design reviews with stakeholders and permitting agencies.
  • Contribute to internal design guidelines, catalogs, and templates for power projects.
  • Perform QA/QC on work of junior engineers and drafters.
  • Provide construction-phase support (RFIs, submittals, CPRs, change orders) and implement agreed changes.
  • Attend client, contractor, and vendor meetings to support business development and project execution.
  • Manage project workload to meet schedules and deliverables.
  • Mentor junior team members and provide technical support to HDR teams and clients.
Key requirements
  • 10+ years in electrical design for BESS, power generation, renewables, electrical distribution, or power system controls
  • Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with Electrical emphasis; PE license preferred
  • Strong knowledge of building electrical power, lighting, life safety, and BMS integration
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office; experience with electrical design software
  • Excellent written and verbal communication across varied audiences
  • Ability to manage multiple complex, time-sensitive projects and travel up to 10%
  • Team-oriented and client-facing with ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment
