Overview

In this Senior Underwriter role, you will build and manage a profitable retail property portfolio within Starr's growing Middle Market Property team. You will evaluate and underwrite new and renewal business, shape terms with brokers and clients, and uphold underwriting standards to support profitable growth. You'll collaborate with brokers, agents, clients, and internal partners to drive outcomes and manage complex risks. This opportunity combines deep technical underwriting with relationship-building and strategic risk selection in a globally recognized insurer.

Responsibilities
  • Solicit, evaluate, and underwrite new and renewal middle market property business from diverse sources
  • Analyze documentation per underwriting standards and request information when needed
  • Prepare and present quotation terms and conditions within authority to brokers and clients
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers, agents, clients, and internal partners to drive portfolio growth
  • For risks outside authority, create written referrals and submit with recommendations to approval authority
  • Review and approve binding terms/conditions, including endorsements and amendments
  • Prepare details for binders and reinsurance documentation; ensure accurate booking and billing
  • Set up, review, and approve policy forms and endorsements for all issued policies
  • Approve final bound policy terms prior to distribution ensuring compliance with underwriting standards
  • Maintain comprehensive file documentation per company procedures
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, insurance, or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of direct property underwriting experience in retail middle market/commercial lines
  • Ability to analyze complex risks and make sound underwriting decisions
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with team and external partners
  • Interest in ongoing professional growth and future management opportunities
  • Proficiency in relevant underwriting platforms and Microsoft Office Suite
