Overview In this role you provide strategic scientific leadership for DARPA MXO programs, guiding evaluation of technical claims and shaping research strategies that link foundational advances to system-level outcomes. You will join a cross-functional team supporting program lifecycle from concept to transition, advising program managers and leaders. You'll assess progress, identify risks, and propose practical risk-reduction actions to advance mission-relevant capabilities. Responsibilities- Provide strategic scientific guidance on complex, multidisciplinary programs and emerging opportunities
- Lead independent assessments of approaches, progress, evidence, failure modes, and recovery options
- Frame new program concepts, milestones, evaluation criteria, and transition paths for breakthrough tech
- Represent rigorous scientific judgment in reviews and mentor other team members
- Advise program managers on planning, execution, cost, schedule, risk, and transition
- Assess performer progress via reviews, site visits, tests, and demonstrations; propose risk-reduction actions
- Develop technical and programmatic materials for leadership and external stakeholders
- Support development of new program concepts by researching emerging science and performing trade studies
- Provide independent, objective advice while protecting sensitive information and complying with security and COI requirements
- Travel as required for program reviews, tests, and partner engagement
Key requirements- Master's degree
- 15 or more years of relevant experience
- U.S. citizenship required for security-clearance eligibility
- Senior-level experience planning and developing R&D projects for defense organizations
- Ability to analyze complex R&D issues and propose credible solutions and mitigations
- Experience in senior leadership roles and advising advanced research initiatives
- Recognition as an expert in a relevant scientific or technical field
