Estimator/Designer - Structured Cabling/Technology Systems

Overview

In this role you will support sales and project teams by translating client needs into accurate material and labor estimates. You will review RFPs, develop RFIs, perform plan take-offs, and craft a cost model that guides project decisions. You'll interact with distributors, manufacturers, and the operations team to ensure specifications align with deliverables. You will design structured cabling systems when required and contribute to turnover documentation and change orders. This position offers exposure to diverse sectors and the chance to influence project outcomes in a client-facing engineering environment.

Responsibilities
  • Review RFPs with the team and develop RFIs as needed
  • Perform physical take-offs of plans to count materials
  • Compile cost models for labor and materials
  • Interact with distributors and manufacturers for pricing
  • Prepare write-ups of services based on plans and specs
  • Assess RFP accuracy using industry knowledge
  • Conduct site surveys when necessary
  • Identify scope gaps for complete systems
  • Design structured cabling when required
  • Prepare turnover documentation for Operations
  • Prepare job-specific submittals
  • Prepare Change Orders as needed
  • Represent Walker Engineering at trade shows and industry events
Key requirements
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in structured cabling construction
  • RCDD required
  • Manufacturer certifications (e.g., CommScope, Panduit) and other BICSI certifications a plus
  • Knowledge of cabling standards (BICSI, EIA/TIA)
  • Estimating/Design experience in Mission Critical/Datacenters, Healthcare, Commercial Office Buildings, Manufacturing
  • Experience estimating projects in the $1M-$5M range and higher
  • Conceptual budgeting/cost modeling
  • Field installation knowledge a plus
  • Audio/Visual and Security systems knowledge a plus
  • Strong Microsoft Office proficiency (Excel & Word)
  • Working knowledge of computing programs
  • Ability to prepare SOWs and write detailed scope documents
