Overview As a Transmission Planning Consultant, you help ensure the reliability and future-readiness of electric grids through advanced planning studies and economic analysis. You will work with a cross-functional team to deliver high-quality technical insights for clients, shaping decisions on renewal and expansion of transmission assets. The role blends engineering rigor with regulatory understanding to address reliability, renewable integration, and market-driven challenges. You will engage with clients, lead analyses, and contribute to project execution and business development in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities- Perform power flow, transient stability, transfer capability, short-circuit, voltage, harmonics, electromagnetic, reliability, and congestion studies
- Evaluate regulatory conditions under NERC, FERC, and regional requirements; conduct production costing and risk assessment
- Independently execute planning studies using PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, Promod
- Develop life-cycle cost analyses including capital and O&M costs and economic forecasts
- Create technical reports and client presentations with findings and recommendations
- Support project managers with deliverables, proposals, and business development
- Participate in client meetings, technical reviews, and planning sessions
- Ensure compliance with company policies and quality standards
- Travel as required to support engagements
- Lead, educate, and train a team of consultants and analysts in transmission planning studies
Key requirements- Bachelor's degree in Engineering with 3 years of related experience or Master's in Engineering or Business with 2 years of experience or PhD with 1 year of experience
- Experience with power system planning and operations; transient stability, short circuit, and voltage analysis
- Knowledge of NERC, FERC, and regional requirements; production costing; risk assessment; TPL compliance; generator interconnection; harmonics analysis
- Experience with electric transmission systems and planning processes
- Proficiency with industry software: PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, Promod
- Knowledge of major ISOs/RECs and regions: PJM, MISO, NEISO, SPP, CAISO, WECC, SERC, ERCOT, NYISO
- Excellent written and oral communication; strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Willingness to travel; PE license preferred
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
- Demonstrated leadership and ability to train a team
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects
