Overview

In this role you represent New York State in environmental, public health, and energy matters in state and federal courts and before administrative bodies. You join a mission-driven Environmental Protection Bureau focused on environmental justice and protecting clean air and water for all New Yorkers. You will handle defensive litigation with potential for affirmative work, collaborating with diverse partners to advance public health and ecological protections. The position offers growth into a specialized environmental litigation practice within a collaborative, supportive team. This is an opportunity to shape state-wide environmental policy and enforcement at scale.

Responsibilities
  • Represent the state in environmental, public health, and energy lawsuits in state and federal courts and in administrative proceedings
  • Engage in defensive litigation with potential for affirmative actions and investigations to enforce environmental laws
  • Develop and litigate contaminated site cleanup cost recovery actions and, recently, decommissioning and cleanup of nuclear sites
  • Defend the state's interpretation of environmental statutes and defend EPA greenhouse gas standards in multistate contexts
  • Build coalitions and collaborate with partner organizations and expert witnesses
  • Conduct research, draft briefs, participate in settlements, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders
Key requirements
  • At least two years of complex civil litigation experience; more welcomed
  • Experience in federal and/or state courts; writing briefs, depositions, court appearances, and settlements
  • Strong writing, research, and editing skills
  • Excellent oral advocacy and courtroom presence
  • Ability to work independently and manage deadlines and priorities
  • Ability to engage with public, scientific staff, agencies, and litigation teams
  • Commitment to public service and interest in environmental/public health issues
  • New York license to practice law and NY resident requirement
