Senior Director, Patent Litigation

Overview

In this role you will help shape Moderna's patent and litigation strategy as a key member of the IP litigation team. You will manage U.S. and select international matters, coordinating with outside counsel and internal teams to ensure timely disclosures and aligned communications. You will contribute to policy development and build scalable IP litigation processes to support Moderna's pipeline and strategic initiatives. This position offers high-impact work at the intersection of science, law, and business, with opportunities to influence global IP strategy and disclosure practices.

Responsibilities
  • Manage a docket of U.S. litigation matters with outside counsel and internal teams; assist with international matters and patent office proceedings
  • Provide pre-litigation strategy with risk mitigation; offer global strategic counsel on patent assessments for the company's pipeline
  • Coordinate with Finance, Corporate Communications, and Investor Relations for proactive disclosures and communications
  • Drive internal and external IP policies to promote innovation
  • Scale and optimize IP litigation infrastructure and processes with internal teams and the business
Key requirements
  • J.D. from a national law school and admission to a U.S. state bar
  • Eligible for in-house licensure via MA Board of Bar Overseers; licensed to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
  • Minimum 10 years' experience handling complex IP challenges and litigation in biotech/pharma; top law firm and in-house experience
  • Hands-on litigation experience including discovery and case strategy; first-chair experience a plus
  • Experience with IPR and EPO proceedings preferred; international IP litigation experience a strong plus
  • Comfort with legal technology and AI-supported workflows; participation in AI-related initiatives; familiarity with GPT-enabled support
  • Outstanding interpersonal and leadership abilities
