Claim Counsel - Healthcare/Managed Care

Overview

In this role you will advise on BSI claims, support underwriting with legal insights, and drive claim resolutions. You will work within a cross-functional team to manage complex claims, coordinate with outside counsel, and influence coverage interpretations. The position sits at the intersection of claims handling and legal advisory, helping to optimize outcomes for customers and the company. You will operate in a collaborative, outcome-focused culture that values risk management and policy interpretation. This is an opportunity to shape strategy on claimed exposures and recovery efforts at scale.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze and resolve BSI claims of varying severity under moderate supervision
  • Prepare management reports on loss development, exposure, reserves, and recovery strategies
  • Manage outside counsel, litigation plans, and budgets
  • Communicate significant claim exposures to underwriting
  • Identify recovery opportunities and coordinate with Recovery Management
  • Attend mediations, settlements, conferences, trials, and depositions
  • Refine policy interpretation and draft coverage opinions with case law
  • Negotiate settlements and review releases with confidentiality provisions
  • Support underwriting marketing, broker visits, risk mitigation seminars, and white papers
  • Monitor market conditions, conduct legal research, and draft reference materials
  • Obtain and maintain required adjuster licenses
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Key requirements
  • Five or more years of relevant legal or claim handling experience
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Juris Doctorate Degree
  • Proper licensing/registration to practice law in the jurisdiction
  • Strong decision-making and negotiation abilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication for coverage determinations
  • Conflict resolution
  • Professional demeanor under pressure
  • Clear communication and collaboration
  • Policy interpretation and coverage analysis
  • Litigation management and budget oversight
  • Negotiation of settlements and drafts of settlement agreements
