Claims Counsel Oak Brook IL

In this role you provide in-house counsel guidance on complex claims and coverage across multiple claim types. You will evaluate coverage issues, oversee litigation with external counsel, and draft clear letters and opinions for claims staff. You'll stay current on coverage case law and communicate trends internally. This position blends legal expertise with claims strategy to protect policyholder and company interests. You will work with cross-functional teams and may travel occasionally.

• Serve as internal claims counsel to support claims adjusters
• Identify, evaluate, and analyze coverage issues
• Draft comprehensive coverage and denial letters to ensure clarity with policyholders
• Manage outside counsel in litigated matters
• Proactively negotiate settlements within authority levels
• Perform legal research and provide opinions to claims personnel
• Summarize coverage case law and trends for internal dissemination
• Occasional travel

• Juris Doctorate (JD)
• 1 to 5 years of law firm/litigation experience and/or 3-7 years of claims handling experience
• Good working knowledge of Westlaw and ability to perform legal research efficiently
• Strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple cases
