Overview

In this role you will lead SALT work for a regional CPA firm, shaping client solutions in state and local tax. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to manage complex SALT matters and drive profitability. You will mentor staff, oversee client service quality, and contribute to practice development and firm governance. This is a senior, impact-driven position with leadership responsibilities and significant growth potential.

Responsibilities
  • Perform technical review and approval of income tax, sales tax, franchise and gross receipts tax returns and examinations
  • Advise clients independently using advanced SALT technical skills
  • Lead client service delivery within budgeted time and drive profitability
  • Develop and execute SALT business development initiatives
  • Delegate tax research and manage staff assignments to ensure accurate outputs
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate accounting staff; handle offers and promotions
  • Represent clients in governmental tax examinations where appropriate
  • Maintain staff qualifications and allocate resources effectively
  • Contribute to quality control updates and firm practice development
  • Foster efficient operations and compliance with firm policies
  • Participate in committees and support cross-functional collaboration
Key requirements
  • Ten to fifteen years of public accounting experience with increasing complexity
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting (Master preferred)
  • CPA or JD with active status
  • Continuous professional education (minimum 40 hours/year)
  • Proven SALT expertise, including sales/use tax and state/local tax issues
  • Strong client service, business development and leadership capabilities
  • Ability to manage complex engagements and budgets
  • Experience recruiting, developing, and evaluating staff
  • Familiarity with government tax examinations and filings
  • Knowledge of firm philosophy and tax opinions
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
