Job description

Overview

In this role you drive the development and optimization of dry etching and thin film processes within Yale's Cleanroom, enabling advanced micro/nanofabrication research. You work with Yale researchers to integrate device fabrication across quantum science, photonics, superconductivity, and biomedical engineering, while mentoring the next generation of scientists. You will lead process development, metrology, and documentation, and manage facility operations to meet evolving research needs. This position offers a hands-on, impact-focused environment where your expertise shapes cutting-edge experiments and scalable fabrication workflows.

Responsibilities
  • Lead development and optimization of dry etching systems (O asher, RIE, ICP-RIE, DRIE).
  • Collaborate to manage thin film deposition systems (CVD, LPCVD, PECVD, ALD).
  • Continuously optimize etching parameters to improve rates, selectivity, anisotropy, and edge roughness.
  • Ensure seamless integration of dry etching and thin film processes in complex device architectures.
  • Oversee service and maintenance of advanced dry etching and thin film instruments.
  • Collaborate with researchers and vendors to update processes and instruments to meet evolving needs.
  • Apply advanced metrology techniques (3D optical microscopy, SEM, AFM, reflectometry, profilometry, ellipsometry).
  • Create detailed documentation including SOPs and tool specifications.
  • Train and mentor the next generation of scientists and engineers in micro/nanofabrication.
Key requirements
  • Expertise in dry etching (O asher, RIE, ICP-RIE, DRIE) and thin film growth (LPCVD, PECVD, PVD, ALD).
  • Hands-on experience in semiconductor device fabrication, cleanroom management, and equipment service and maintenance.
  • Experience with materials characterization using 3D optical microscopy, SEM, AFM, reflectometers, profilometers, and ellipsometry.
  • Proven experience with process analysis, SPC, and DOE for optimization and troubleshooting.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
