Overview

As a Managing Research Scientist at IHME, you lead and develop a research team while driving the design, execution, and dissemination of key health estimates. You supervise staff, mentor junior researchers, and ensure timely delivery of rigorous analyses. You will work on diverse data sources to quantify health burdens, including lead exposure, and contribute to peer reviewed publications. This role blends leadership with hands on analysis in a collaborative, innovation driven environment.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise and develop research staff: hiring, training, setting quality standards, performance reviews, mentorship
  • Identify training needs and ensure team resources for task completion
  • Foster morale, run structured team meetings, track progress and next steps
  • Monitor performance, resolve issues, and ensure policy/regulatory compliance
  • Attend leadership trainings as designated by ODT and IHME Director
  • Manage research dissemination: lead trainings, give presentations, and engage with internal/external partners
  • Independently perform quantitative analyses and contribute to reciprocal projects
  • Develop and implement new computational and statistical methods; write code (R preferred, Python acceptable)
  • Contribute to research design; draft presentations, manuscripts, and funding proposals; co author peer reviewed articles
  • Maintain scientific awareness and collaborate with external research teams
  • Grow a peer network with solid command in engineering/technical areas and relevant data sources
  • Other duties as assigned
Key requirements
  • Master's degree in relevant field plus four years' related experience
  • Equivalent education/experience acceptable
  • Previous supervisory experience with hiring, development, and performance coaching
  • Excellent analytic, critical thinking, and quantitative skills
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and manage changing priorities
  • Experience in statistical modeling techniques
  • Ability to diagnose problems in results and diagnose root causes in data/methods/code
  • Proficiency in coding in R (preferred) or Python
  • Strong written and oral communication; track record of co authorship and presenting results
  • Experience collaborating with external research teams
  • Experience with large data sets and reliable data management strategies
  • Ability to work independently and in teams; long term interest in research scientist role
  • Prefer MD or PhD and additional experience; machine learning, data mining, hierarchical models, geospatial models desired
  • Experience with US survey, census, vital registration data sources
