Overview

In this role you will design and deploy ML-driven systems to personalize reader experiences and enhance content discovery. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams to turn large-scale data into actionable recommendations and engaging narratives. You will work on modern ML techniques, including embeddings, transformers, and GenAI-powered discovery, to improve reader engagement and business outcomes. This is a mission-driven opportunity to reshape how audiences find and understand journalism at scale. Responsibilities
  • Design, train, evaluate, and deploy ML models for personalization, recommendations, ranking, and user modeling
  • Build systems for homepage ranking, article recommendations, related content, and real-time user modeling
  • Apply transformer-based models, embeddings, two-tower architectures, learning-to-rank, and GenAI approaches to content personalization
  • Support AI-powered reader experiences including content understanding and question answering
  • Conduct offline and online evaluations, including A/B testing and causal analysis
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable and maintainable AI/ML solutions
  • Communicate model approaches, results, tradeoffs, and impact to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Stay current with advances in ML, GenAI, NLP, and recommender systems
Key requirements
  • 2+ years of applied ML, data science, or related experience
  • 2+ years of Python experience and proficiency with ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX)
  • Experience with large-scale datasets and real-world ML problems
  • Strong foundation in ML, statistics, evaluation, and experimental design
  • Experience with ranking, recommendation, personalization, NLP, or GenAI applications
  • Bachelor in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related technical field
