Overview In this Counsel role, you will oversee the legal aspects of MLB and MiLB's commercial activities across licensing, events, marketing, technology, and gaming. You will partner with business and operational units to structure and negotiate major agreements, while guiding outside counsel and supporting internal teams. You will support data privacy, information security, and consumer protection issues within a fast-paced, high-stakes sports environment. This position offers a chance to shape transactional strategy for a globally recognized league and its clubs, with a focus on execution and cross-functional collaboration.
Responsibilities- Negotiate and structure major commercial and licensing agreements to meet business needs
- Advise MLB and MiLB business units on legal issues across technology, events, marketing, sponsorship, and licensing
- Communicate with clubs regarding league agreements and operational matters
- Provide in-house legal services and practical guidance to internal teams
- Oversee and coordinate with outside counsel to align on strategy and execution
- Support transactions related to technology infrastructure, software licensing, data privacy, and information security
- Assist with consumer protection and compliance considerations in commercial activities
- Manage multiple high-priority tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Interact with senior management to provide timely legal counsel
- Contribute to deal reviews and risk assessments for enterprise-wide initiatives
Key requirements- Member of New York State Bar in good standing
- Minimum four (4) years as a practicing lawyer
- Significant transactional experience in licensing and complex commercial agreements
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
- Ability to operate effectively with senior management
