Overview In this role you will help advance power system operation through high-impact R&D at Hitachi Energy's Raleigh center. You'll collaborate across cybersecurity, machine learning, and automation to develop real-time control and predictive modeling tools for grid reliability. You'll lead and contribute to interdisciplinary projects with external partners to push boundaries in power system operation. Your work will support the energy transition by shaping smarter, resilient grid technologies.

Responsibilities- Propose, contribute to, and lead R&D projects in power system operation and related fields
- Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and business units to address real-world customer challenges
- Support and ensure successful execution of research projects across teams
- Serve as the power systems expert in interdisciplinary teams (ML, cybersecurity, human-technology interaction)
- Identify technology gaps aligning with future business needs in power system operation technologies
- Develop novel ideas for power system control across timescales from 1 second to intra-day
- Collaborate with external partners (universities, national labs, startups, vendors)
- Disseminate results via scientific publications, patents, and technical reports
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and guidelines
Key requirements- Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with focus on power systems, or Master's with equivalent industrial experience
- Industrial experience in transmission or distribution control room operations (valued)
- Experience with SCADA, EMS, DMS, or substation automation (desirable)
- Familiarity with NERC standards or ISO operational guidelines (preferred)
- Knowledge in power system modeling, dynamics, operation, control or planning
- U.S. work authorization for employment at Hitachi Energy in the United States
