Civil Engineering Design Lead, Transportation

Overview

In this role you will apply your transportation design expertise to lead project delivery across multiple concurrent projects. You will review design submittals for compliance with tollway and state standards, oversee constructability and value engineering, and support client engagement and business growth. You will mentor junior staff and coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure quality, budget, and schedule alignment. Responsibilities
  • Review design submittals for conformance with tollway, IDOT, and AASHTO criteria
  • Operate the submittal-review pipeline with AI-enabled triage to prioritize reviews
  • Maintain QA independence separating reviewers from design work
  • Lead constructability and value-engineering coordination with Construction Monitor and CM teams
  • Support errors-and-omissions reviews on design contracts and root-cause analysis
  • Participate in interviews to win new work
  • Plan, organize, and direct project work to deliver successful client outcomes
  • Keep PM informed of progress and respect PM responsibilities
  • Lead client and project team to meet budget, schedule, and design intent
  • Assist in negotiation and development of project agreements
  • Mentor junior team members and motivate project teams
  • Ensure timely completion and documentation of PM Framework tasks
  • Lead project coordination and owner/site meetings with stakeholders
  • Determine staffing needs with PM and recommend personnel
Key requirements
  • Extensive design experience and ability to win work during proposals
  • Capable of supporting multiple PMs on several projects
  • Strong knowledge of accessibility and life-safety codes, building systems, means and methods, and standards
  • Proactive, self-directed action with strong prioritization skills
  • Effective multi-deadline management and prioritization
  • Strong negotiation and communication abilities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Newforma; experience with Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering (preferred)
  • PE license in Illinois
  • 10 years of industry experience
