Staff Underground Engineer (Northeast Region)

Overview

In this role you will lead design teams on underground transmission projects, interfacing with utility clients and cross-office groups to deliver safe, compliant solutions. You'll develop routing analyses, feasibility studies, and construction packages that meet budget and client needs, while guiding less experienced staff and supporting business development. You will communicate results clearly, support QA/QC, and contribute to thought leadership and client relations. This is a hands-on leadership role with impact on project delivery and client satisfaction.

Responsibilities
  • Lead design teams of 2-10 engineers and designers
  • Interface with utility clients and multiple offices
  • Develop distribution and transmission construction packages for underground projects
  • Perform routing analyses using CADD/GIS software
  • Assess construction feasibility via route studies and cost estimation
  • Conduct field inspections and measurements on electric facilities
  • Use simulation tools to evaluate scenarios and propose recommendations
  • Ensure deliverables meet client expectations and internal QA/QC guidelines
  • Prepare calculations, equipment specifications, and design packages
  • Prepare proposals, cost estimates, and execution schedules
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced staff
  • Regularly communicate with clients, subcontractors, and outside personnel
  • Support business development efforts and thought leadership
  • Other duties as assigned
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from ABET-accredited program and 3 years of transmission engineering experience (consulting preferred)
  • Or Bachelor's in Civil/related Engineering Technology with FE exam completed and 3 years of transmission engineering experience (consulting preferred)
  • Or Master's in Civil Engineering with 2 years of transmission engineering experience (consulting preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of standard civil/structural techniques
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Analytical problem-solving and quantitative skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, PLS, PLS-CADD, RISA-3D, MathCADD or similar transmission analysis tools
  • EIT certification preferred
  • Travel availability around 10%
  • Experience with consulting is preferred
