Overview

In this role you will underwrite middle market commercial property and casualty risks, making data-driven decisions within delegated authority. You will manage broker and client relationships and help shape portfolio strategy to drive profitability. You'll handle moderately to highly complex submissions and collaborate with Claims, Actuarial, Risk Control, and Legal to structure risk mitigations. This position requires in-person presence within the designated territory as part of local broker engagement, offering growth within Liberty Mutual's underwriting practice.

Responsibilities
  • Underwrite middle market accounts within authority by evaluating submissions, coverage terms, exposures, loss history, and financials to determine acceptance, terms, and pricing
  • Make independent risk selection and pricing decisions aligned with appetite and profitability
  • Coordinate referrals for higher authority or specialized cases
  • Manage a portfolio of brokers, agents, and insureds; strengthen market presence as Liberty representative
  • Develop broker strategies to source profitable business and expand market share
  • Provide timely responses to brokers and clients; negotiate coverage and terms while protecting profitability
  • Underwrite higher-limit or complex submissions common to middle market clients (specialty exposures, multi-location, industry-specific hazards)
  • Engage Claims, Actuarial, Risk Control, Legal to structure terms and risk-mitigating plans
  • Mentor and coach junior underwriters on practices and processes
Key requirements
  • Degree in Business or equivalent
  • 2.5-3+ years of progressive underwriting experience
  • CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred
  • Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks
  • Proficiency with qualitative and quantitative tools and techniques
  • Ability to handle complex technical underwriting issues and implement workflows
