Overview

In this role you oversee materials operations forMissoula-area highway construction, serving as the authority on materials standards, sampling, testing, and application. You coordinate with the District Materials Supervisor and Materials Bureau to ensure consistent, compliant judgments in the field. You'll manage major materials projects, budgets, timelines, and resources while leading the Area Materials Laboratory to ensure accurate sampling, testing, and result analysis. This position combines technical lab oversight with supervision, contributing to safe, compliant, and efficient construction programs.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee materials operations across highway construction phases
  • Act as the Area's authority on materials standards, sampling, testing, and application
  • Coordinate with District Materials Supervisor and Materials Bureau for consistency and compliance
  • Manage major materials projects including budgets, timelines, and resource allocation
  • Administer the Area Materials Laboratory ensuring compliance, accuracy, and integrity of sampling, testing, and analysis
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
  • Supervise 2-4 FTE (varying by division)
  • Support safety and compliance in all lab and field activities
Key requirements
  • Minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in construction lab testing or highway construction, including at least one year in a supervisory role
  • Two years of technical training or college/technical coursework
  • Knowledge of materials standards, inspection, sampling, testing, and analysis techniques
  • Familiarity with state, federal, AASHTO, FHWA, and ASTM testing standards and project specifications
  • Ability to manage budgets, timelines, and resource allocations
  • Ability to supervise staff and coordinate with multiple stakeholders
  • Valid driver's record and compliance with state vehicle policies
