Overview You will serve as a technical leader in Markel Claims, handling the most complex high-exposure Casualty claims with substantial autonomy. You'll guide coverage analyses, manage outside counsel, and support underwriting with legal insights on policy wordings. The role includes mentoring colleagues, representing Casualty Claims across the organization, and shaping strategies for litigation and settlement. Responsibilities- Manage a full caseload of the most complex high-exposure Casualty claims with minimal supervision
- Analyze coverage positions and manage related litigation
- Coordinate and direct investigations to shape resolution strategy
- Evaluate exposure, reserves, and damages to inform settlements or trials decisions
- Negotiate settlements or provide recommendations for trial when appropriate
- Mentor and train junior examiners and managers in Casualty Claims
- Advise underwriting on contractual wordings and legal issues
- Present on coverage developments and US litigation landscape to underwriting and claims teams
- Lead special projects and collaborate with Claims Vendor Management, Actuarial, Underwriting, Finance, IT, and Risk Management
- Travel to mediations, trials, and conferences as required
- Adhere to Fair Claims Practices and internal Quality Performance objectives
Key requirements- 10+ years of claims handling and management experience or equivalent
- Law degree (preferred)
- Claims adjuster license must be held or eligible to obtain
- Strong claims technical skills and product-line knowledge, especially Casualty wordings and coverages
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Outstanding analytical and problem-solving abilities
