Overview In this role you will provide strategic legal guidance to Pew's program teams, helping them navigate a growing array of domestic and international activities. You will support contracting, IP, data sharing, lobbying and ethics compliance, sanctions, and defamation matters, while drafting and reviewing complex agreements. You'll translate legal risk into actionable business insights, collaborating with outside counsel and internal stakeholders to advance Pew's mission. You work in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment where your legal expertise shapes partnerships and program delivery. Responsibilities- Advise internal clients on project planning, compliance with domestic and international laws, and programmatic work
- Provide risk-calibrated legal advice for current, expanding, and new activities including partnerships
- Advise on nonprofit compliance issues (advocacy, lobbying, government ethics, sanctions, etc.)
- Conduct staff trainings and develop educational resources
- Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of agreements
- Identify and communicate legal and reputational risks to decision makers
- Collaborate with colleagues to inform department and organizational objectives
- Manage outside counsel for project-specific or specialized advice
- Perform other duties as assigned
Key requirements- J.D., licensed to practice in the District of Columbia or eligible for admission promptly
- Eight years of relevant experience, with at least five years of legal experience
- Experience advising nonprofits, multilateral institutions, government agencies, or similar organizations on compliance, including lobbying and government ethics
- Strong client service mindset and creative, collaborative problem-solving
- Excellent communication skills and ability to summarize complex issues clearly
- Experience working in a team with multiple partners and stakeholders
- Experience in developing and delivering trainings and educational resources
- Confident yet collegial interpersonal skills for relationship-building at all levels
