Principal Scientist, Synthetic & Discovery Chemistry

Overview

In this role you will lead synthetic chemistry within a closed-loop, AI-enabled discovery platform, shaping routes that are automatable and data-driven. You will work with Automation, Biology and Data Science teams to ensure rapid, high-quality chemistry output suitable for machine learning. As a chemistry SME for select external programs, you translate requirements into executable synthesis plans. You'll mentor junior chemists and contribute to lab-wide SOPs and best practices. Responsibilities
  • Plan and execute single- and multi-step synthetic workflows in the automated lab; ensure routes are robot-executable and throughput-compatible
  • Troubleshoot chemistry, optimize reaction conditions, and maintain high data quality across synthesis campaigns
  • Own NMR and analytical data workflows; ensure accurate characterization and data integrity in ELN and data systems
  • Develop multi-step synthesis concepts (2-3 steps) and translate them into automatable routes
  • Act as chemistry SME for external customer programs; collaborate with BD and project leads to define scope and milestones
  • Supervise and mentor junior chemists and contractors; contribute to SOPs and continuous improvement of lab workflows
Key requirements
  • PhD in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Chemical Biology, or closely related field
  • At least 5 years of industry experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, or related synthetic chemistry
  • Strong track record in synthetic organic chemistry with hands-on parallel synthesis
  • Experience with automated chemistry platforms and translating bench routes into automation-ready protocols
  • Proficiency in NMR and standard small molecule analytical characterization
  • Proven ability to work in cross-functional teams with biologists, automation engineers, and data scientists
