Overview In this Staff Attorney role, you will provide high-quality civil legal services to low-income clients across multiple counties. You'll focus on family law and strategic advocacy, including work with survivors of violence and substance abuse, while engaging with community partners. You will join a mission-driven team dedicated to reducing poverty through equitable access to civil justice. This is a clínica style public interest opportunity with cross disciplinary collaboration and outreach.

Responsibilities- Provide high-quality legal representation to low-income clients
- Interview clients and witnesses using trauma-informed practices
- Conduct legal research, gather evidence, and advise clients on rights and options
- Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents
- Represent clients in court and before administrative agencies
- Manage a caseload involving significant litigation and advocacy
- Interpret laws for clients and community partners
- Engage in family law matters (divorce, custody, protective orders, child support)
- Work in various civil practice areas as needed (housing, family law, consumer rights, employment, public benefits, probate, foreclosure prevention, education/health)
- Design and participate in community legal education and outreach
- Build relationships with community organizations
- Collaborate on strategic advocacy to reduce poverty
- Refer clients to services within networks
- Attend evening clinics as needed
- Supervise staff and volunteers as assigned
- Monitor grant requirements and ensure compliance
- Adhere to professional and ethical standards
Key requirements- Licensed to practice law in Texas or awaiting reciprocity approval
- 2 years' experience in contested family law preferred
- Strong understanding of Texas Family Code, Rules of Civil Procedure, and Rules of Evidence
- Prior public interest or volunteer experience preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication
- Caseload management and strategic thinking
- Strong work ethic, accountability, professionalism
- Cultural competence with diverse populations
- Commitment to public interest law and serving low-income communities
- Reliable attendance and travel flexibility within LANWT's service area
- Spanish fluency preferred
