Associate Attorney, Workers' Compensation

Overview

In this in-house role, you defend California workers' compensation matters and develop independent case management over time. You'll work closely with junior and senior attorneys, Claims Partners, and a collaborative legal team to gain hands-on litigation experience. The position emphasizes mentorship, skill-building, and growth within a modern, tech-enabled practice. This is a remote-friendly opportunity with selective in-person appearances, offering meaningful impact within a reputable, ethics-focused insurer.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in handling California workers' compensation defense matters under supervision
  • Support case strategy development through factual investigation, legal research, and file analysis
  • Draft pleadings, discovery responses, motions, and petitions with supervision and feedback
  • Prepare for and participate in depositions, hearings, trials, and ADR proceedings
  • Communicate case status and legal analysis to Claims Partners and internal stakeholders
  • Coordinate with opposing counsel, WCAB staff, and external vendors according to office procedures
  • Participate in team huddles, file reviews, and strategy discussions to improve outcomes and learning
  • Maintain compliance with continuing legal education requirements and stay current on CA WC law and WCAB procedures
Key requirements
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Active California license in good standing
  • Legal internship or early-career litigation experience preferred
  • Familiarity with workers' compensation or insurance-related litigation a plus
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills
  • Effective communication and collaboration in a matrixed environment
  • Proficiency with MS Office and comfort learning legal technology tools
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and grow toward independent handling of cases
