Assistant General Counsel (Insurance Counsel)

Overview

In this role you provide practical legal guidance to USAA's business leaders, helping them advance strategic objectives while minimizing regulatory and litigation risk. You will handle pre-litigation insurance coverage matters for personal lines and partner with cross-functional teams and outside counsel. You'll stay ahead of evolving laws and industry standards to support a compliant, risk-aware organization. This role offers a meaningful impact by shaping insurance strategy across a 50-state model and serving the military community.

Responsibilities
  • Provide legal counsel to support business objectives and mitigate risk across regulatory, compliance, and litigation domains
  • Lead complex assignments with high business impact andcraft appropriate solutions
  • Communicate clearly with stakeholders and leadership via verbal and written channels
  • Monitor changes in laws and industry regulations; brief leadership on implications
  • Collaborate with USAA teams and Chief Legal Office to mitigate risk
  • Coordinate with outside counsel or contract professionals to complete assignments
  • Assist more senior attorneys on highly complex matters and escalate significant risks
  • Serve as a resource to less experienced team members and support risk-based decision making
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited school
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
  • Licensed and in good standing to practice law in one state or territory
  • 6 years of relevant experience with at least 4 years as a practicing attorney
  • Ability to communicate legal advice effectively to business partners
  • Strong communication and written skills
  • Proactive collaboration across functions
  • Risk awareness and sound judgment
  • Experience handling insurance coverage matters
  • Ability to prepare coverage analyses and coverage opinions
  • Experience drafting reservation of rights letters
