Overview In this role, you will serve as senior legal advisor to the Martinez Refinery leadership, focusing on HSE regulatory compliance, enforcement actions, and related labor and procurement matters. You will shape compliance strategies, coordinate with internal teams and outside counsel, and help steer regulatory advocacy and training. The position sits in the Legal Department and reports to the Martinez Refining Company LLC leadership team, onsite at the Martinez Refinery. You will drive risk-aware solutions in a highly regulated energy environment and partner across functions to protect the business and support growth.

Responsibilities- Provide legal guidance on HSE compliance (air, water, waste) and labor/employment issues
- Assist in planning and delivering solutions for HSE matters impacting MRC
- Represent MRC in enforcement actions before federal and state agencies
- Develop MRC advocacy position on future regulatory matters and engage with industry trade groups
- Deliver compliance training to business teams
- Manage and coordinate outside counsel and budgets
- Provide legal support for corporate and site audits
- Coordinate use of in-house and outside legal resources efficiently
Key requirements- J.D. degree required
- Licensed to practice law in California or eligible for Authorized In-House Counsel in California
- 10+ years of experience in HSE regulatory compliance or litigation in energy, refining, chemical, or manufacturing
- Willingness and ability to travel as needed
- On-site work location at the Martinez Refinery
- Strong written and oral communication
- Interpersonal skills and collaboration across levels
- Detail-oriented with good research abilities
- HSE regulatory compliance knowledge (air, water, waste)
- Litigation experience in energy/manufacturing
- Labor and employment matters related to represented workforces
