Sr Estimator (Mechanical Contractor)

Overview

In this role you will lead mechanical estimating efforts for industrial, HVAC, and piping projects. You'll review bid documents, generate detailed takeoffs, and craft competitive proposals to support on-time wins. You will collaborate with estimators, operations, and clients to ensure scope clarity and robust cost strategies. The position emphasizes value engineering, accurate pricing, and a smooth transition from estimate to execution. This is a hands-on role that shapes project outcomes and client satisfaction through precise, timely bids.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings and scope reviews to understand project requirements
  • Review bid documents, drawings, and specifications
  • Solicit and manage subcontractor and vendor quotations for outsourced scopes
  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs using on-screen estimating software
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with estimators, operations, and internal departments
  • Compile and finalize comprehensive estimates with accuracy and deadlines
  • Participate in internal bid-day reviews to validate Pricing, Scope, and Strategy
  • Evaluate subcontractor and vendor proposals for scope completeness, compliance, and schedule alignment
  • Develop value engineering options aligned with client goals and efficiency
  • Prepare clear scope narratives to support proposals
  • Provide post-award support to field operations and ensure smooth transition
  • Manage multiple bid schedules and meet proposal deadlines
  • Identify project requirements and cost drivers with limited input data
  • Balance high-level understanding with attention to detail to ensure client satisfaction
Key requirements
  • 10+ years of mechanical estimating experience, preferably in industrial, HVAC, and/or plumbing
  • Proven experience estimating process piping projects
  • Strong knowledge of Design-Build and Plan & Spec delivery methods
  • Proficiency with estimating software, on-screen takeoff tools, and spreadsheets
  • Ability to produce accurate, competitive, and timely estimates with minimal information
  • Strong understanding of cost structures for Design-Build projects
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with clients, vendors, subcontractors, and stakeholders
