Overview As a Senior Mechanical Estimator at Walbridge, you lead mechanical estimating on large, complex projects, guiding preconstruction strategy and cost leadership. You will provide technical direction, mentor the team, and ensure estimates are accurate and competitive to drive successful outcomes. The role supports cross-functional collaboration with project teams and client engagement, with travel between Detroit and regional offices. You will shape bid strategy and value engineering opportunities, contributing to Walbridge's project wins and execution excellence.
Responsibilities- Lead mechanical estimating strategy for complex projects and coordinate with senior leadership on bid and proposal approach
- Provide technical leadership, mentor team members, and promote estimating best practices
- Evaluate design options and apply lean principles to improve outcomes
- Prepare shadow estimates and oversee subcontractor estimates from concept through GMP and final bid
- Review drawings and specs to define scope, takeoffs, and pricing
- Develop general conditions estimates, budgets, bulletins, RFIs, and preliminary schedules
- Maintain estimate backup documentation and identify value engineering opportunities
- Lead subcontractor solicitation, bid leveling, and scope validation with strong vendor relationships
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, job walks, and client presentations
- Evaluate risks, market conditions, and cost trends to inform estimates; manage contingency and pricing for changes
Key requirements- 5+ years of estimating and/or engineering experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related technical discipline (or equivalent experience)
- Mechanical design-build experience preferred
- Significant experience in mechanical estimating within commercial, industrial, or mission-critical environments
- Advanced knowledge of plumbing, HVAC, heavy process piping, estimating techniques, and cost control
- Ability to read specifications and drawings
- Process piping experience, including high-pressure heavy-wall piping systems, code piping, and refinery piping
- Strong communication, presentation, and teaching skills
- Knowledge of CSI divisions and health and safety regulations affecting cost
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and estimating software/tools
