Overview As an Optical Systems Engineer within L3Harris Space Systems, you will apply optical and electrical engineering to hardware development for free-space optical links and ground terminals. You will guide system requirements, designs, and verifications while coordinating with cross-functional teams to deliver hardware on schedule. You'll build performance models, run link budgets, and implement mitigation techniques in collaboration with mission-focused stakeholders. This role offers impact through advancing satellite optical architectures in a fast-growing segment, with opportunities to lead complex programs and drive continuous improvement.
Responsibilities- Review and allocate system requirements for free-space optical links and ground terminals
- Develop and run performance models and simulations (link budgets, pointing/tracking, adaptive optics)
- Integrate optical terminals into satellite architectures and coordinate with cross-functional teams on design and test
- Oversee hardware development, testing, and validation activities
- Lead technical teams and programs to deliver hardware on schedule and within scope
- Manage and verify requirements using DOORS or Jama
- Manage subcontractors and draft Statements of Work ensuring program compliance
- Support system/module/sub-assembly testing, troubleshooting, and process improvement
- Assess customer needs, perform design trades, mitigate risks, and contribute to business pursuits
Key requirements- Bachelor's Degree and 12+ years of related experience; or Graduate Degree with 10+ years; or 16+ years with no degree
- Experience with optical design, integration, and testing of optical assemblies
- Experience leading technical teams
- US DoD Secret security clearance (or ability to obtain)
