Overview

As Lead Group Underwriter on the Specialty Health team, you assess risk and set pricing for Supplemental Health products, shaping profitable growth and client retention. You'll work independently on complex cases while partnering with Sales, Product, Pricing, and Operations to drive business results. The role emphasizes risk evaluation, collaboration, and process improvement to strengthen underwriting capabilities. This is a hands-on opportunity to influence underwriting strategy and deepen technical expertise in a supportive, cross-functional environment.

Responsibilities
  • Underwrite new business, renewals, and amendments for Supplemental Health products
  • Manage an assigned in-force book of business
  • Assess risk using group characteristics, demographics, participation, and claims experience
  • Perform experience rating and collaborate with actuarial partners on pricing and risk
  • Apply underwriting guidelines, authority limits, and pricing methods to determine coverage and rates
  • Make underwriting decisions within authority and escalate as needed
  • Prepare underwriting analyses, pricing recommendations, and renewal strategies for business partners
  • Support RFP responses and submissions via third-party platforms
  • Collaborate across Sales, Account Management, Product, Pricing, Operations, and underwriting partners to deliver coordinated solutions
  • Build relationships with internal and external partners and grow underwriting expertise across the team
  • Identify opportunities to improve underwriting processes, tools, and reporting capabilities
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or 4 years of related experience in lieu of degree
  • 5+ years of Supplemental Health underwriting experience
  • Strong analytical, communication, and relationship-building skills
