Research Engineer - Computational Materials Science & Self-Driving Materials Discovery

Overview

In this role you will conduct applied atomistic-scale materials research within Bosch RTC-NA, leveraging classical and AI-driven simulations to guide product development. You will work with cross-functional teams, validate models, and contribute to publications and IP. The position emphasizes collaboration with external partners and a pipeline that connects simulation to real-world experiments. You will build an AI-enabled framework to democratize atomistic insights for Bosch engineers, shaping next-generation technologies.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct atomistic-scale materials research based on solid physical-chemical principles
  • Apply conventional methods and AI tools to derive actionable insights for material selection and optimization
  • Identify and collaborate with external partners
  • Present research findings internally and in peer-reviewed outlets, and contribute to IP disclosures
  • Contribute to an interdisciplinary research environment across materials science, physics, chemistry, AI, and experimental automation
  • Develop an AI-based framework enabling engineers to apply atomistic simulation to industrial materials with high impact
Key requirements
  • PhD in a relevant field (materials science, chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, biophysics)
  • Hands-on experience with atomistic simulation and computational materials science (DFT, MD, Monte Carlo, phase-field, multiscale)
  • Proficiency in programming; experience with Python or equivalent tools
  • Experience applying AI/ML techniques to scientific problems (active learning, Bayesian optimization, RL, automated workflows, autonomous labs)
  • Ability to conduct independent research and communicate results across disciplines
  • Evidence of research impact via publications, patents, open-source contributions, or equivalent
  • Written and verbal communication across disciplines
  • Collaborative mindset in interdisciplinary teams
  • Independent problem-solving and initiative
  • Atomistic simulation (DFT, MD, Monte Carlo, phase-field, multiscale)
  • High-performance computing environments
  • Python ecosystem for scientific computing
