Overview

In this role you will provide scientific and technical leadership for next-generation leadership-class HPC systems. You will steer a multidisciplinary team within the ATS/OLCF to define a strategic research agenda spanning hybrid classical-quantum computing, advanced interconnects, and storage technologies. You'll architect co-design frameworks and evaluate novel fabrics, topologies, and programming models for exascale-scale workloads. You will help shape collaborations with vendors, national labs, and academia while contributing to publications and proposals. This is a mission-driven opportunity to advance leadership computing at ORNL and the HPC community.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a multidisciplinary research team, providing mentorship and technical direction
  • Define and execute a strategic agenda for advanced computing systems architecture
  • Architect and evaluate hybrid HPC-quantum systems and co-design integration frameworks
  • Lead R&D on next-generation interconnects, fabric architectures, routing, and in-network computing
  • Drive storage systems research, including storage-class memory and disaggregated architectures
  • Foster collaborations with internal ORNL teams, DOE, partners, industry, and academia
  • Represent ORNL/ATS in technical forums, standards bodies, and vendor engagements
  • Author publications, reports, and proposals; secure external funding
  • Evolve design processes and system characterization methods and disseminate best practices
Key requirements
  • PhD in a relevant field
  • 8+ years of research experience in HPC systems or related domain
  • Proven experience leading or co-leading research teams
  • excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication
  • ability to represent programs to leadership, sponsors, and scientific communities
  • strong motivation and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
  • HPC systems architecture and large-scale system design
