Overview

In this role you will serve as the Curator of Bioarcheology within the New York State Museum, advancing osteological research and ethical curation of human remains. You will work under a senior supervisor to ensure compliance with burial protection and repatriation laws, while developing public programs and scholarly publications. The position combines fieldwork, collections management, and grant-seeking to support bioarchaeology initiatives that illuminate New York's past populations. Your work will engage diverse audiences and contribute to policy and museum exhibitions that reflect community priorities and scholarship.

Responsibilities
  • Provide osteological expertise and fieldwork under burial protection acts;
  • Oversee repatriation processes for Native American remains and funerary objects;
  • Curate the human osteology collection and update curatorial policies;
  • Conduct independent bioarchaeology research on past New York populations;
  • Assist law enforcement with human remains identification upon request;
  • Supervise junior staff, interns, volunteers, and students in curatorial tasks;
  • Prepare research for conferences, publications, and educational programs;
  • Seek and manage external funding to support research and programs;
  • Develop and deliver public programs and exhibitions related to archaeology;
  • Contribute to archaeology-related exhibitions and community engagements.
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree and four years of professional experience or a Master's degree and three years of professional experience or a doctoral degree and one year of professional experience
  • Preferred: Ph.D. in archaeology with New York bioarchaeology experience
  • Experience with curating a museum collection in bioarchaeology
  • Experience with fieldwork in bioarchaeology
  • Experience with NAGPRA and repatriation
  • Understanding of NYS Unmarked Burial Site Protection Act
  • Experience developing and producing museum exhibitions and public programs in bioarchaeology
