Underwriting Consultant, National Accounts Casualty, Excess & Umbrella

Overview

In this role you drive the growth, profitability, and quality of a book of excess umbrella business by underwriting complex risks and managing agency relationships. You will collaborate with internal partners to price, quote, and negotiate, while staying compliant and current on industry trends. You'll contribute as a technical expert, support cross-sell initiatives, and help shape our market-facing underwriting capabilities. This position offers hybrid work in New York City and a path to leadership within CNA's underwriting team.

Responsibilities
  • Review applications and financial requirements for complex risks and determine acceptability
  • Determine pricing based on financial and competitive analysis in line with compliance
  • Prepare quotes and address inquiries from agencies and policyholders; escalate issues with proposed solutions
  • Negotiate with agents to achieve positive, profitable outcomes
  • Notify agencies of adverse decisions and rate changes; manage underwriting requirements
  • Analyze risk profitability and prepare management reports
  • Market products through agencies/brokerage channels and maintain relationships
  • Support cross-sell opportunities and guide underwriters/other teams as needed
  • Stay updated on state/regulatory issues and industry trends
  • Utilize CNA systems for day-to-day tasks
  • Collaborate with senior underwriters on risks beyond authority
Key requirements
  • Advanced knowledge of underwriting and insurance industry theories and practices
  • High level of technical expertise and product knowledge
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Independent judgment and critical decision-making
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business software
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Typically eight years' underwriting experience (or 5-10+ depending on role)
