Overview

In this Principal Engineer role, you will lead structural and architectural engineering efforts within Exponent's Civil & Structural Practice, shaping client solutions and expanding the practice. You'll guide analytical work, field investigations, and diagnostic surveys while maintaining strong client relationships and contributing to expert testimony when needed. The position blends technical leadership with business development in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.

Responsibilities
  • Lead business development and client development efforts
  • Inspect, analyze, and determine root causes of structural/building envelope performance failures
  • Conduct projects and supervise analytical and computer problem solving
  • Lead field investigations and diagnostic surveys
  • Prepare and present technical reports and complex engineering assessments
  • Pursue ongoing professional development to maintain expertise
  • Provide expert testimony where appropriate
Key requirements
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related field
  • Significant business development experience with a proven track record
  • PE or SE licensure in at least one state
  • Ability to attract projects and manage a team
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in technical engineering and project management post-graduation
  • Strong professional reputation with existing client base
  • Experience providing expert testimony in dispute resolution
  • Experience in construction claims, dispute resolution, and litigation services
  • Experience drafting/reviewing analyses, reports, and presentations
  • Effective leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Publications record is a plus
