Overview

As Manager in Exponent's Materials Science & Electrochemistry Practice, you lead client-ready investigations on material performance, degradation, and failure across industries. You'll partner with senior staff to grow the consulting practice, manage lab analyses, and deliver rigorous results. Your work supports safer, more reliable products while expanding client relationships and cross-disciplinary collaboration. This role combines technical leadership with business development in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities
  • Apply materials science expertise to investigations on performance and failure across industries
  • Build and nurture meaningful client relationships
  • Identify opportunities to grow the consulting business through project work and client engagement
  • Coordinate laboratory testing and analyses (SEM, EDS, FTIR, XRD, EIS, cyclic voltammetry)
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver rigorous technical solutions
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Support project planning, execution, and occasional travel for client meetings or site work
  • Mentor junior staff and foster a collaborative, inclusive team environment
Key requirements
  • Ph.D. in Materials Science or closely related field
  • Minimum 5 years of consulting experience in materials science
  • Proven ability to build and nurture client relationships; existing book of business is a plus
  • Experience in product safety/liability/recalls; construction defect claims; subrogation; failure to perform/equip; or IP
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with data interpretation abilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for diverse audiences
  • Collaborative mindset with experience managing a small team (2-5 members)
  • Project management experience coordinating tasks, timelines, and deliverables
