Overview In this role you will lead a multidisciplinary bioinformatics team supporting pathogen genomics and fieldable analytics for DoD-relevant missions. You guide automated pipelines, genomic analyses, and AI/ML methods to enable rapid, field-ready insights. You'll collaborate across international partners, drive reproducible methods, and deliver actionable results through documentation and training. Responsibilities- Lead and mentor a team of bioinformatics analysts and engineers
- Develop, validate, and maintain automated bioinformatics pipelines
- Oversee genome assembly, annotation, taxonomic profiling, phylogenetics, and molecular epidemiology
- Guide analysis of clinical, environmental, wastewater, animal, vector, bacterial, viral, and bacteriophage samples
- Lead testing and evaluation of bioinformatics software and methods for DoD applications
- Develop or improve fieldable bioinformatics software and workflows
- Apply AI/ML methods to biological/genomic data
- Establish reproducible methods, docs, and source-control practices
- Create user guides, training materials, and technical documentation
- Support field demonstrations and training for laboratory personnel and field operators
- Coordinate reach-back support, including after-hours when required
- Collaborate with CONUS/OCONUS partners in austere environments
- Communicate findings via reports, briefings, publications, and presentations
Key requirements- Ph.D. or Master's degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science with biology/bioinformatics experience
- At least 10 years of hands-on bioinformatics experience
- Multiyear experience in computer science, genomics, bioinformatics, and computational biology
- Expert programming in Java, Perl, Python, and R
- Familiarity with NGS platforms (MiSeq, NovaSeq, NextSeq, iSeq, MiniSeq, MiSeq i100/i100 Plus, PacBio, ONT MinION/GridION)
- Experience with microarray and/or single-cell sequencing technologies
- Excellent communication, independent judgment, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to lead technical work under deadlines and provide after-hours support
- Ability to travel internationally and work in potentially austere environments
