Consultant - Specialty Program Underwriting - Alternative Ventures

Overview

As a Consultant, you analyze complex risk to craft insurance solutions that balance client needs with business goals. You'll underwrite individual risks, drive program development, and support new opportunities in Specialty lines. The role combines technical underwriting with collaboration across partners and reinsurers to scale programs. You'll mentor staff and help shape underwriting guidelines while delivering measurable program profitability. This remote, cross-functional opportunity suits a hands-on problem solver motivated by responsible growth.

Responsibilities
  • Drives sales and underwriting relationships for Programs products and services
  • Develops and implements underwriting guidelines, rates, forms, and procedures
  • Reviews highly complex risks and decides on accept/decline within programs
  • Leads implementation of new programs ensuring integration across departments
  • Interacts with claims, actuary, compliance, and other partners to achieve goals
  • Mentors underwriting staff and trains team members
  • Engages with re-insurers and prepares data for reinsurer presentations
  • Maintains knowledge of insurance regulations and compliance
  • Generates and analyzes data for forecasting, trends, and profitability
  • Travel for marketing visits to program managers
  • Attends industry events to promote the Programs brand
  • Audits risks/programs for compliance and implements action plans
  • Manages relationships with program managers to drive growth and profitability
  • Supports development of risk management strategies and loss control initiatives
Key requirements
  • Typically five or more years related experience in Professional, Financial, or Specialty lines underwriting
  • Program leadership experience in professional lines preferred
  • Strong knowledge of underwriting policies, insurance law, and market principles
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, influencing and negotiation skills
  • Ability to manage large programs and apply innovative solutions
  • Proficiency in analyzing financial documents and market conditions
  • Experience with data management, imaging, and related processes helpful
  • Graduate degree preferred
