Overview In this role you lead the Building Services Department at UW Facilities, guiding Custodial Services and UW Recycling to support campus safety, cleanliness, and sustainability. You'll manage a large team and a multi-million-dollar budget, ensuring high-quality services across 11+ million gross square feet. You'll align operations with institutional priorities and drive continuous improvement. You'll partner with HR, unions, and campus partners to shape a safe, efficient, and sustainable workplace.
Responsibilities- Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Building Services Department, aligning with institutional priorities and service excellence standards.
- Oversee personnel administration across the department, including labor relations, performance management, and recruitment in collaboration with unions and HR.
- Direct supervision of 8 direct reports and 18 managers/supervisors with accountability for 300 FTE and a large annual budget.
- Manage service expectations, develop policies/procedures, and ensure high-quality cleaning standards across campus.
- Monitor budget and resource utilization, including testing of products/equipment and staying current with industry advances.
- Lead safety programs and regulatory compliance to mitigate risk and promote a safety culture.
- Drive sustainability initiatives and waste management in partnership with UW Sustainability.
Key requirements- Bachelor's degree and ten years of progressively responsible management experience including personnel supervision, fiscal management, and training in human relations and sensitivity to multi-ethnic groups.
- Experience managing custodial and building services in a large-scale operation, preferably two years.
- Valid Washington State driver's license.
- Equivalent education/experience may substitute for minimum qualifications.
- Preferred: ISSA and/or IEHA certifications; APPA Leadership in Educational Facilities certification.
