Overview In this role you will develop accurate cost estimates for commercial and industrial mechanical projects. You will analyze drawings and specs, perform quantity takeoffs, and build labor, material, and subcontractor costs to support competitive bids. You will collaborate with project teams, suppliers, and clients to ensure constructability and alignment with schedules. Responsibilities- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs and prepare cost estimates for HVAC, piping, plumbing, and fire protection scopes
- Review drawings and specifications (AutoCAD/CAD) to identify scope, risks, and constructability issues
- Develop cost breakdowns by labor, material, equipment, and subcontractors; prepare bid summaries and scopes of work
- Solicit quotes from subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers and integrate pricing into estimates
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and design teams to clarify scope and suggest value engineering
- Maintain estimating databases, historical cost records, and unit price libraries
- Prepare and present estimate narratives and bid packages for internal review and client proposals
- Participate in pre-bid and client meetings, address technical questions, and provide cost guidance
- Monitor bid activity, track changes and allowances, and support post-bid procurement and kickoff
Key requirements- Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum 35 years of estimating experience in mechanical construction with a focus on commercial and industrial projects
- Proficiency in reading mechanical drawings, BIM models, and specifications; AutoCAD and other CAD tools
- Experience with digital takeoff and estimating software (PlanSwift, Bluebeam, Sage/Timberline or similar)
- Strong knowledge of HVAC, piping, plumbing, and fire protection; unit costing for materials and labor
- Analytical, math, and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail
- Effective verbal and written communication; comfortable presenting estimates and negotiating with subcontractors and clients
- Ability to manage multiple bids under tight deadlines; collaborative in a fast-paced environment
- Familiarity with building codes, safety standards; OSHA/NICET or estimating credentials are a plus
