Managing Quantity Surveyor Heavy Civils

Overview

In this senior role, you will assume responsibility for the commercial performance of a portfolio of major infrastructure projects in Scotland, leading the commercial management from award to final account. You will work closely with project and senior management to optimize cash flow, risk, and profitability while mentoring the commercial team. This is a chance to influence outcomes on high-profile civil engineering schemes and strengthen client and subcontractor relationships. The role combines strategic oversight with hands-on contract and cost control in a busy delivery environment.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the commercial management of major civil engineering projects
  • Manage projects through the full commercial lifecycle
  • Administer contracts across standard forms
  • Oversee applications, valuations, variations and change
  • Produce cost reporting and forecasting for performance management
  • Procure and manage subcontractors
  • Manage commercial risk and identify opportunities
  • Support contractual correspondence and project governance
  • Manage final accounts
  • Mentor and support members of the commercial team
  • Build strong relationships with clients, subcontractors and stakeholders
Key requirements
  • Significant quantity surveying experience in heavy civils or major infrastructure
  • Previous experience at Senior QS or Managing QS level
  • Strong knowledge of major contracts, especially NEC
  • FIDIC experience
  • Experience delivering full lifecycle of projects
  • Subcontract management, cost control and forecasting expertise
  • Experience managing commercial risk and contractual change
  • Ability to work effectively with operational and senior management teams
  • Experience with other international or major infrastructure contract forms beneficial
  • Stakeholder management
  • Strong communication and relationship-building
  • Leadership and mentoring
  • NEC contract knowledge
  • FIDIC experience
  • Contract administration
